How integrated screens balance architecture, working comfort and energy performance

BUILD WITH LIGHT, CONTROL WITH SHADING

Contemporary architecture is becoming increasingly transparent. Large areas of glass provide abundant daylight, an open spatial feeling and a strong connection to the environment. At the same time, this transparency brings new challenges. Overheating, glare and energy performance require thoughtful solutions. Shading plays a crucial role in this.

For architects and building professionals, this means that solar shading is no longer a purely technical element, but an integral part of the design. Solutions must not only perform, but also integrate discreetly into the façade image. With its advanced screen systems, Wilms develops solar shading that supports architecture rather than disrupting it.

Discreet integration into modern facades

Minimalism and clean lines define the look of many new construction projects today. Disturbing elements such as visible cabinets or technical additions no longer fit into that design narrative. That is why architects are increasingly opting for compact and subtly integrated blinds. “For architects, it is important that technical solutions reinforce the design,” says Thomas Vanhauwere, Sales Manager at Wilms. “Solar shading should match the facade aesthetically while providing a comfortable indoor climate.”

Wilms screens combine that aesthetic integration with technical performance. Their compact design and broad finishing options allow them to blend seamlessly with different façade concepts and architectural styles.

Project in the Spotlight: Ockier Advocain Kortrijk

A fine example of that balance between architecture and comfort is the new office building of Ockier Lawyers & Partners in the Benelux Park in Kortrijk. The building stands out for its distinct architecture with large expanses of glass, high ceilings and an open, light-rich working environment.

However, that transparent architecture also brought a challenge. Due to the southern orientation and the extensive window sections, thoughtful control of solar radiation was necessary to prevent overheating and annoying reflections. The solution was found in the integration of 91 automated front screens from Wilms, discreetly incorporated into the façade concept.

The screens block much of the sun's heat even before it reaches the glass, keeping the indoor environment stable without obstructing the view outside.

“When it comes to solar shading, the focus is often on the south façade, while east and west façades are also important concerns,” Thomas Vanhauwere explains. “The low-hanging sun can cause disturbing reflections on computer screens. With the right blinds, you manage that solar radiation and work comfort remains guaranteed.”

Smart technology for energy-efficient buildings

In addition to thermal comfort, modern screens also contribute to a building's energy performance. By keeping solar heat out, the need for active cooling is significantly reduced. In the project in Kortrijk, automation and smart control play an important role in this regard. The sun blinds react automatically to solar radiation, while users can make manual adjustments if desired. This creates a flexible system that combines comfort and energy efficiency.

Shading as an integral part of architecture

Ockier Lawyers' project shows how solar shading can be a strategic part of design today. Working with architect and construction team early on aligns aesthetics, comfort and energy performance. For architects, that means more design freedom. For users, it results in a light-rich working environment with a stable indoor climate. A clear evolution in contemporary architecture: those who build with glass must also build with shade.
