A little dream with a south-facing patio: In the Belgian town of Roeselare, the residents of a large single-family home with a stylish outdoor space have been enjoying cozy afternoons on their spacious patio for several years now. However, to make their summer bliss complete, they were still missing shade to protect against the bright sun. They chose two awnings from the manufacturer markilux, which create a comfortable, feel-good space for the whole family.
Advice as the Key to Satisfaction with Awnings The clients began the project with a clear vision in mind: they wanted two awnings that would visually complement the villa’s aesthetic perfectly. At the same time, the awning fabrics were to serve as a colorful addition to the light-filled outdoor space. To get a better idea of the possibilities, the clients visited the showroom of a markilux specialist partner to seek advice on their sun protection project. Both the quality and the wide range of designs convinced the couple to choose the awnings from this manufacturer, which produces its products in Germany.
The discussion between the consultant and the Belgian clients revealed that problems might arise during installation on the existing building. For this reason, appropriate technical solutions for the installation were developed in advance. This was one of the reasons why a folding-arm awning was chosen—specifically, the minimalist model with a full cassette, the markilux 970. This type of awning is popular with many patio owners because it is completely enclosed when retracted. This keeps both the folding arms and the fabric protected from dirt and the elements. At the same time, both the installation and the individual accessories—such as radiant heaters or lighting—can be flexibly configured.
In addition to the villa’s facade, the window frames and the tiles on the patio floor are also finished in light tones, creating an elegant atmosphere. To integrate the sleek and slim profile of the markilux 970 as discreetly as possible into the villa’s exterior wall, the clients opted for a white frame. While most customers prefer solid fabric designs in subdued white, gray, or beige, the homeowners boldly opted for colorful stripes: A summery yellow-and-white striped fabric from markilux’s suncolours collection lends the otherwise tranquil garden a charming vacation atmosphere.
The two awnings, each 4.5 meters wide, provide a total of 27 square meters of shade—enough space to set up two seating areas. Combined with a minimalist pond and large green potted plants, this creates an oasis of tranquility where the whole family can enjoy cozy afternoons even when the sun is shining brightly.

When installing awnings on existing buildings, the wall structure often poses a challenge. That was also the case with this project: “Because of the delicate masonry, the specialized installers used a mounting plate specifically designed for the markilux Model 970. This allowed us to reduce the awning’s pull forces, which in turn protect the wall structure,” explains Peer Cornelssen, head of the International Sales department. Thanks to its precise fit, the mounting plate is invisible and therefore does not affect the overall design of the awning. The couple from Roeselare who commissioned the project are pleased that everything—both technically and in terms of design—was realized exactly as they wished. They’re already looking forward to shaded afternoons with friends and family throughout the summer.
