Global Shading Day: shading as a solution to overheating

Natural cooling is becoming increasingly important

On March 21, the first day of spring, Global Shading Day once again took place. This international awareness day drew attention to the important role of shading in a warming climate. Belgian sun protection specialist Harol also emphasized the importance of natural cooling in homes.

Natural cooling

According to an International Energy Agency study, energy consumption for cooling will more than double by 2050 if we do not change the way we build and cool. Solar shading can provide an efficient solution to this problem. By blocking the sun's heat before solar rays reach the glass, the interior stays cooler, reducing the need for energy-intensive air conditioning.

“Many people don't think about cooling until it's already too hot in the house,” said Isabelle Wintmolders Marketing Manager of Harol. “With outdoor blinds, you can prevent heat from coming in. It is actually the most natural form of air conditioning. At the same time, modern sun protection systems combine functionality with design, making them a perfect fit for contemporary architecture.”

The need for cooling is also increasing in Belgium. During hot summers, temperatures can quickly rise in homes without shading, especially with large glass windows and well-insulated homes. Exterior sun protection, such as screens, awnings, patio covers or shutters, block the sun before the heat can even get inside, helping to prevent homes from overheating.

Some figures

- Shading can reduce energy consumption for cooling by 2050 to 60%;

- Less air conditioning can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 58%;

- Shading can save up to 285 billion euros in energy costs in Europe;

By participating in Global Shading Day, Harol wants to emphasize the importance of shading as a sustainable and comfortable solution for hot summers.
