It is the general picture in the entire sun protection industry: 2020 was an explosively busy year, 2021 went ‘thick and fast’ over that. At Markiezen Nederland, too, all sails had to be set. “In 2020 and 2021 we experienced two major boosts in sales,” Johan Hol explains. “Sometimes it was exciting for a while, because the delivery times of raw materials increased.”
While sales increased, it became more difficult for Marquees Netherlands, for example, to get the necessary aluminum in on time. Several fabric brands and other suppliers also had trouble delivering, Hol notes. “But by smartly spreading our purchasing and confectioning ourselves, we managed and were able to deliver 99% of the orders on time.”

Awnings are and remain popular, and not only in combination with traditional architectural styles. At Awnings Netherlands, they see as a clear trend that awnings are increasingly combined with modern architecture. “A real volume maker,” says Aart van den Berg. “The aluminum awning is gaining popularity everywhere. Among other things, its maintenance-free nature appeals to consumers. We purchased a CNC machine for finishing the corrugated aluminum side-cap. The machine easily pays for itself, as it is used more and more often. Thus we produce very cost-effectively with 100% control over quality.”
Marquesas Netherlands tries to bring as much peace and quiet as possible to the production process. “That requires investing upfront,” Hol explains. “For example, we are going to commission our own muffle line in January. Then we can use the quiet winter months to produce parts in advance and go into the new season relaxed.”
The awning may be a classic in awning terms, yet this shade maker has evolved into a completely contemporary product, according to Aart van den Berg. “You can see that in the materials used, such as aluminum frames enamelled in a color of your choice, classic-looking, all-aluminum shades, technically perfect cloths, motor operation, remote control and even battery motors with solar panels. Who would have thought that ten years ago. So the awning is no longer traditional, but has become a hip product!”
Because the product is selling well and demand for it is increasing, dealers of Marquesas Netherlands get all the support they need. “We train salesmen and mechanics, we guide our dealers and above all we are transparent in our way of working,” Johan Hol explains. “That is appreciated and everyone benefits. Selling awnings is adding value and it gives a lot of satisfaction.”

With 300 m2 of floor space added, Markiezen Nederland has created more production space. “We are now working almost entirely on two floors; if it continues like this, we will grow out of space,” Hol says in conclusion. “We are already cautiously looking at the neighbor's building. In any case, a truck will be added in February 2022, to keep logistics at the same level as production...”
