Application of VELUX skylight from reclaimed wood saves material use and CO2

In Wormerveer, Logchies renovation and maintenance carried out energy measures on 81 homes on behalf of housing corporation Parteon. For example, the old skylights were replaced with more energy-efficient ones, and roof and wall insulation and mechanical ventilation were installed. Circular solutions were also taken into account during the renovation process. For example, in cooperation with BMN Bouwmaterialen, Logchies chose the VELUX skylight made of reclaimed wood which saves 100% over new wood.

In order to maintain a healthy and pleasant living environment in the future, it is important to use fewer materials. We must also reduce our CO2 emissions in the coming years so that buildings are completely CO2 neutral by 2050. To achieve these ambitions, everyone in the building chain, such as contractors, housing corporations, suppliers and building material dealers must work together. Future-proofing and making the housing stock more sustainable is a key focus in this regard. Housing corporation Parteon therefore carries out large-scale maintenance projects to make its housing stock more sustainable and includes circularity as an important component. Logchies carries out sustainability projects for the corporation and is always looking for circular solutions.

"By working sustainably and results-oriented with clients throughout the chain, transparency can emerge and solutions are created that transcend their own interests. Our goal is to have all our maintenance and renovation projects fully circular by 2023. To this end, we are working with BMN Bouwmaterialen, among others, which supplies a wide range of circular and bio-based building materials," said Paulina Logchies general manager Logchies renovation and maintenance.

VELUX rocker window with reclaimed wood

For the project in Wormerveer, old roof windows were replaced with the energy-efficient VELUX roof windows made of reclaimed wood. Since the 1960s, huge numbers of VELUX roof windows have been installed in the Netherlands. Due to innovations and stricter energy requirements, these windows are replaced with more sustainable VELUX roof windows in renovation projects after about forty years. In this project, VELUX roof windows made of reclaimed wood were specifically chosen.

"Housing associations and contractors are increasingly looking for sustainable solutions and ways to build circularly. The VELUX roof window made of reclaimed wood is certified as 'FSC 100% Recycled' and represents a special proposition for larger projects," says sustainability manager Ronald Bal of VELUX Netherlands. "This 'reclaimed' wood comes from used wood, such as beams and roof boards that have been 'rescued' from demolition buildings that are sometimes up to 100 years old, Which reduces the use of new wood by 100 percent. In addition, the product meets the strict quality criteria of the VELUX Group and FSC. It is tested, approved and CE-certified according to EU regulations and product standards, so we can give it all the usual guarantees. This is how we take responsibility for the materials we use. Circular is becoming the new standard and will accelerate more and more due to increasing demand, supply and knowledge."
