R+T: 'Greater effectiveness of solar shading through integration into smart home systems'

Elsewhere in this Z&R, you can read that the R+T is strongly committed to sustainability in the 2024 edition. Saving energy - and increased living and living comfort - through shading and blinds is then, of course, a major theme; but not a new one. "After all, we have long known that screens, exterior blinds and shutters help to keep out the heat from the sun in the summer and actually insulate in the winter and help to keep the heat in," ROMA's marketing manager Tobias Löhner knows. "And we also know that with automated systems those effects are stronger."

Thoughtful concepts

They are also convinced of this at Warema. "Energy efficiency is also firmly embedded in our DNA, says Marion Fische, who is marketing manager at Warema. "Modern blinds help save energy but also protect against prying eyes. Intelligent control systems can additionally serve comfort and security, or in office or school buildings, for example, also daylight management.

The power of the sun

Saving energy is also an important topic for R+T exhibitor Alulux. This company, too, has therefore launched a solar-powered shutter system on the market. Such systems are not only energy-efficient, of course, but also relevant because no electrical installation work is required for their installation. They function independently of weather conditions because they are battery-powered. The solar panel on the cabinet needs only a little sunlight to charge the battery. If the sun has not shone enough to sufficiently charge the battery, the Alulux system can also be easily charged with a plug cable.

Effective controls

In general, of course, outdoor blinds are most effective when controlled automatically. Integration into a smart home system creates additional opportunities for a positive energy balance for homes and buildings. Equipped with weather sensors, shading systems can reduce energy consumption even further because they then react directly to (weather) conditions.

Some sun protection manufacturers offer this type of control system themselves. For example, the Austrian-based sun protection specialist HELLA, based in Abfaltersbach, has the in-house developed ONYX control system in its product range in addition to high-quality outdoor sun protection systems. "Outdoor awnings but also patio coverings can be easily controlled with it using the smartphone, tablet or via app, voice control or fully automatic," says HELLA-Gruppe managing director Andreas Kraler. With ONYX.HOME for private individuals and ONYX.PRO for larger residential or office buildings, HELLA has tailored control solutions available. "Sustainability is also becoming increasingly important in the construction industry, and solar shading makes an indispensable contribution to this," Kraler observes.

"For HELLA, sustainability and digitalization are closely linked," the director continues. "Highly automated shading systems work like passive air conditioning systems, but are much more environmentally friendly. With ONYX, we have a system that can be connected to all common smart home systems: It lets the sun in only where it is wanted. So whether it's a room full of light in winter or a cool bedroom during hot summer nights. Moreover, when combined with weather sensors, shading systems help to further reduce energy consumption. Then the app automatically prompts the user to take action depending on the weather, no matter where they are at the time, at home or elsewhere."

"Anyone who wants to keep abreast of the latest technology in the field of outdoor shading and its automatic control should set aside enough time for R+T 2024 in Stuttgart," concludes Sebastian Schmid of Messe Stuttgart. "Because one thing is certain: all well-known key players will be there to inspire the trade audience with their innovative products."
