This year, the solar shading industry is experiencing mixed economic conditions. While demand for sustainable and smart solutions is creating opportunities, cost increases and labor shortages are creating challenges.
Romazo has again done a number of important things for its members. The highlight this year is that we have come much further with training. We organize training for mechanics (Mechanic's Day 2025) and advisors (Smart Solar Shading Advisor). Over 300 sales advisors have already received European certification in recent years. This year, the ROC is starting an elective course in solar shading mechanics, where MBO students can learn about the profession. Until now, this elective course has not been taught anywhere in the Netherlands. Romazo has developed the course material and the exam together with its members.
Solar shading is still underused in the energy transition in the Netherlands. It prevents overheating in the summer, reducing the need to turn on the air conditioning, and screens and shutters insulate in the winter. Together with manufacturers, Romazo is starting a lobby to bring solar shading to the attention of both the central government and municipalities. A number of municipalities already subsidize solar shading, but why not throughout the Netherlands.
Housing associations are also informed. Tenants pay rent for a certain standard of living enjoyment. If overheating reduces the enjoyment of living, this can be a reason to question the rent increase and even to refuse the rent increase until the situation is remedied with, for example, solar shading. Many corporations are not yet sufficiently aware of this and Romazo wants to change this. This obviously represents a great opportunity for the awning companies. Romazo has prepared a memorandum for its members containing the arguments that can convince housing corporations to apply blinds more often.
