German awning manufacturer markilux has a wide range of products for both private applications and projects, including projects in the hospitality industry. In this issue, two case studies where markilux products were used for a hospitality terrace and for the outdoor area at a hospital cafeteria.
Hotel Löwen is located in the middle of an imposing mountain landscape in Austria's elongated Montafon Valley. In 2022, the hotel operators invested in the expansion of the building, which included providing the hospitality terrace with weather protection. The choice then fell on screen systems from markilux.
The operator of the four-star Hotel Löwen in the Austrian mountain village of Schruns in Vorarlberg wanted to make the terrace adjacent to the hotel more attractive to guests by providing it with all-weather protection. The choice fell on a pergola stretch from markilux for shade on the terrace and on the free-standing system markilux markant for a smaller, separate terrace.
Supported by markilux's experienced service team, the local sun protection specialist - in close consultation with the (interior) architect charged with expanding the hotel - first installed the approximately 165 m2 pergola system, consisting of five segments, in one week in July 2022. Then, at the end of 2022, the more than 50 m2 freestanding system was realized in just two days.
The cooperation of a qualified planning team with a specialized local company was an important customer requirement in addition to high product and design quality, according to head of markilux project Jan Kattenbeck. In addition to the requirement to be able to generously protect the total of around 100 seats outside from sun and rain during the summer season. To achieve this, several vertical sunshades were also used with the two terrace systems. They can be lowered when the sun is low and in addition, together with the LED lighting integrated in the screen, they create a pleasant atmosphere in the evening. "The spatial feeling that invites you to stay outdoors longer is now part of Hotel Löwen's ambitious experience concept. That, in addition to the smooth running of the project, is a success for us and the customer!" said a satisfied Kattenbeck.
In 2022, the Tauernklinik Zell am See in Pinzgau, Austria, had part of the terrace at the company canteen covered by a weatherproof screen system. The choice fell on the Markilux pergola classic, which is equipped with waterproof fabric. The terrace has since been used as a relaxation area for the staff.
After a complex renovation that took several years, the Tauernklinik Zell am See is today a state-of-the-art hospital. Most recently, the hospital courtyard was redesigned two years ago. As part of this, in the summer of last year, part of the cafeteria terrace was covered with a large multi-pitch classic pergola by markilux.
The hospital wanted a modern-looking, high-quality shade solution to match the architecture that would set an accent through its color scheme. "The bright green cloth makes the terrace look friendly and light, with a relaxed atmosphere," said Jan Kattenbeck. This is because the hospital management wanted to design the 120-square-meter outdoor space for nursing staff and doctors in an attractive way. In addition, the terrace had to be able to be used as independently of the weather as possible.
The pergola system from markilux meets this requirement, says Kattenbeck. "Thanks to the load-bearing uprights and the fabric that is guided flush into the guides by our tracfix technology, the screen is extremely wind stable. In addition, depending on the size of the system, one or more of the front uprights can be retracted to allow any rainwater to drain away from the fabric properly." In addition, to protect against light rain, the system in Zell am See chose the highly water-repellent screen fabric sunvas perla FR. A special fabric that is also flame retardant. After all, certain safety requirements must be met for public buildings such as the Tauernklinik.
Markilux is proud that in cooperation with the local markilux partner and others involved, another successful reference object was realized. "Everything was so coordinated that the large pergola system was fully installed after only two days," said Kattenbeck. "It could hardly be any better! Not only are we happy about that, but of course our client is too!"
