Modern residential architecture is all about balance. Clean lines, large glass surfaces, and a thoughtful choice of materials call for solutions that perfectly complement the design—both aesthetically and functionally. In this contemporary home, a deliberate choice was therefore made to use a smart combination of ZipX®Zero built-in screens and Wilms front-mounted roller shutters, each tailored to the function of the space and the practical possibilities of the home.

On the ground floor, where openness and natural light are key, built-in screens were integrated into the living spaces. Thanks to their subtle integration into the facade, the clean architectural lines are fully preserved. At the same time, these screens ensure a pleasant indoor climate by effectively preventing overheating, without obstructing the view outside.
“With large glass surfaces, it’s important to integrate sun protection not only technically but also aesthetically,” says Wim de Haas, Wilms“ representative for the Netherlands. ”Built-in screens offer a particularly elegant solution. They keep the heat out while allowing residents to continue enjoying the benefits of natural light and a connection to the outdoors.”
On the upper floor, the decision was made to install front-mounted roller shutters, which are retrofitted to the facade. After all, in rooms such as bedrooms, comfort, privacy, and light blockout are the top priorities. Roller shutters also provide additional insulation and a greater sense of security—features that are particularly valued in bedrooms.
The combination of screens and roller shutters demonstrates how customization is becoming increasingly important in residential projects. After all, not every room has the same needs. By selecting the right solution for each floor and each function, you create a home where comfort and ease of use take center stage, without compromising on aesthetics.

Another notable feature of this project is the solar-powered front-mounted roller shutters that were installed in several locations. This solution offered significant added value, particularly in locations where a conventional electrical supply was less feasible. Consider, for example, the bathroom, where installing additional wiring was more difficult within the finished construction design.
Thanks to integrated solar panels, these roller shutters operate completely autonomously, without the need for major roof work or demolition. Furthermore, they are perfectly aligned with the growing demand for energy-efficient and sustainable solutions in residential construction.
“Solar solutions are rapidly gaining popularity, both in renovation projects and in new construction,” says expert Wim de Haas. “They offer architects and residents extra flexibility without compromising on comfort or design.”
This project demonstrates how a well-thought-out mix and match of sun protection techniques can enhance both the comfort and the architectural appeal of a home. By making smart choices for each room, a comprehensive concept is created in which technology, aesthetics, and sustainability reinforce one another, fully in line with the expectations of today’s homebuyers.
