Blinds, sun protection screens, and external roller shutters and their role in sustainable construction.

Buildings account for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU. It is therefore high time to improve their energy balance efficiently. This is not only important from an international ecological point of view, but also for individual users, who are affected by rising energy prices, both for heating and cooling their homes.

Hot, as in Brussels

It may seem as if we are not one of those countries that have a major problem with global warming. After all, we are still below the average temperatures of Spain or southern Italy. The Royal Meteorological Institute However, it reported that the temperature in Belgium has risen by 1.9°C over the past 100 years, and by 2.1°C in the Brussels region.

Since 2015, we have seen at least one heatwave per year, which statistically speaking is becoming longer (+2 days per decade) and more intense (+1°C per decade). If this trend continues, the average temperature in Belgium will rise by 5°C in 100 years.  A heatwave as long as the one in 2018 (26 days) could then have catastrophic consequences.

How can we reduce the effects of global warming and stop global warming? AEC's answer (Architecture Engineering Construction) is sustainable construction, while respecting nature and reducing the carbon footprint. This can be achieved by reducing energy consumption at every stage of a building's life cycle, from construction to demolition.

Awnings for windows play an important role in sustainable construction., because they significantly reduce the building's energy consumption.

Up to 30% less energy consumption!

Ecological buildings limit energy losses in winter and protect against overheating in summer. External roller shutters are the most common solution in construction, and they have been very popular for a long time.

– External roller shutters are becoming even more efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to new installation solutions, says Emmanuel Gregoire, managing director at Aluprof Belgium nv. The use of modern external roller shutters with additional thermal insulation results in a 30% saving in the building's energy balance, says the Aluprof expert.

Facade blinds for visual comfort.

External roller shutters are not suitable for every building. In modern buildings with large glass surfaces, where people spend the whole day, the need for natural light is essential to optimize the energy balance and guarantee the comfort of the users.

The façade blinds come in handy here, as the movable slats themselves can determine the degree of darkening of the room.

Facade blinds are practical sun blinds that provide sufficient visual comfort in the building. With facade blinds, you can freely adjust the angle of the slats during the day, ensuring optimal adjustment of the sunlight. The aesthetically profiled slats in combination with cassettes and guides are also an interesting solution for architects who can impressively shape the spatial aspect with a modern look for the facade.

– Aluprof's range includes four variants of façade blinds: adaptive (SZF/A), self-supporting (SZF/S), and two recessed (SZF/P and SZF/BX). We are also currently working on new solutions., says Gregoire.

Modern buildings require modern solutions, especially when ecology is a priority. In sustainable buildings, ensuring sufficient lighting and absorbing energy in winter is essential to reducing energy consumption. In summer, however, large glass surfaces can be a problem. That is why a sustainable building cannot do without sunshades on the windows.

– In the SKB STYROTERM surface-mounted roller shutter system, we have ensured that it is possible to use external roller shutters and facade blinds on the same facade. This allows us to maintain a uniform, aesthetic appearance. Until recently, public buildings and office buildings preferred such solutions, but the increase in teleworking from home also makes combining roller shutters and blinds a convenient solution in residential construction., explains Emmanuel Gregoire.

Solar screens

After external roller shutters and facade blinds, sun protection screens are a third way to ensure energy balance.

– Last year, we introduced three such solutions to our range. Two of them (SkyRoll ZIP and SkyRoll Classic) can even be used on glazing surfaces of 16 m².2 are used. Special fabrics protect against sunlight, allow light into the room, and minimize glare as much as possible. It's a perfect solution for offices and public buildings, adds Gregoire.

The Aluprof brand offers three systems: SkyRoll Zip, SkyRoll Classic, and SkyRoll Eco, the first two of which are available in recessed, surface-mounted, and adaptive variants. For sustainable construction, it is recommended to use the recessed and adaptive variants. The surface-mounted variants increase the risk of thermal bridges.

This wide selection ensures that we have a solution that can be tailored to the needs of users, explains the managing director. Aluprof Belgium NV out.

Screens on windows are not only environmentally friendly, they also save money.

Between July 2021 and December 2021, natural gas prices in Belgium rose by an average of 50 %. As a result, the average annual gas bill from €1386.05 to €2780.21. The increase in electricity prices is ‘only’ 27 %. However, keep in mind that if the weather is good and the summer is hotter than last year, when we had an extremely wet summer, energy consumption will increase rapidly. For individual users, protection against excessive heating of rooms in the summer is therefore becoming increasingly important, because it is a real reduction in air conditioning costs enables. They tend to opt for investments in which the possibility of limiting the amount of sunlight reaching the home was already provided for in the design phase.

The increased interest in awnings is also due to an additional problem during the summer months, namely mosquito invasions. Tiger mosquitoes arrived in Belgium several years ago, and the presence of these insects is increasing year after year. It is worth noting that the SkyRoll ZIP screen systems can be equipped with insect screens. to protect the interior of the rooms from insects.

Let's build a better future

Window screens are a necessity if the building is to meet sustainable building requirements. At the same time, screens offer a significant individual benefit for buyers or tenants, as they reduce costs. Increasingly efficient solutions in line with sustainable building trends give hope that the future in the era of increasing global warming does not have to be so negative.
