Smart drive technology simplifies shading projects

The demands on modern sun protection systems are increasing. The technology must be reliable, but integration into building automation, ease of use and ease of maintenance also play an increasingly important role. Becker Benelux responds to this with a wide range of drives and control solutions, but especially with an advisory role towards installers, project developers and building owners.

"We see it as our job to think along with project partners from the early stages," says Philippe Goossens, Account & Business Development Manager of Becker Benelux. "Whether it's new construction, renovation or an expansion: we advise on the right technology, provide training and, where necessary, support on-site commissioning." According to Goossens, that guidance is important because in practice, wrong choices are quite often made between wired and wireless solutions or between different protocols.

CentronicPlus with nesting function

A solution that Becker often recommends in projects is CentronicPlus. This wireless control system with nesting function (mesh network) is particularly interesting in renovations or projects where wiring is difficult or costly. The mesh network ensures that signals from transmitters are forwarded via other motors or controls. This keeps the system reliable even in complex buildings with a lot of concrete or steel.

With CentronicPlus, motors can be easily grouped and centrally controlled. Via the corresponding app (in combination with a CC41 central unit), users can control shutters, screens and blinds individually or in groups. Scenarios, such as "evening mode" or "blinds active in bright sunlight," are also easy to set. The app offers bi-directional communication: users see the status of their blinds and receive notifications in case of blockages or malfunctions.

SMI for integration and precision

For projects where blinds are part of a larger building automation system, Becker specifically recommends SMI motors. SMI (Standard Motor Interface) is a wired solution with a standardized protocol that allows motors from different manufacturers to work together without problems. This is especially an advantage in large projects where uniformity and long-term maintenance are important.

SMI motors from Becker provide active position feedback, meaning the system knows exactly what position a screen or roller shutter is in. "With this, you can not only achieve a sleek and uniform facade appearance, but also save energy because the blinds react exactly to sun intensity or temperature," Goossens said. With SMI, up to sixteen motors can be controlled in parallel with one actuator, saving space in the control cabinet and simplifying wiring. Commissioning is easy via an app thanks to the SMI actuator's Bluetooth interface, with no programming knowledge required.

When what?

According to Becker, the choice between CentronicPlus and SMI depends heavily on the type of project. In projects where flexibility, wireless expansion and ease of use are key, CentronicPlus with nesting function offers a solution. Consider schools, homes and renovations where existing construction limits the options. For new construction projects, offices and buildings with building automation systems, SMI is the logical choice, especially if precise positioning and integration with KNX or similar systems is required.
