Gibus: 'The bioclimatic slatted canopies Twist and Varia impress'

Gibus features the bioclimatic pergolas Twist and Varia. "Canopies that impress," says Managing Director Martijn Westenbrink of Gibus Netherlands and Belgium. Upgrading outdoor spaces, both residential and hospitality, is a trend that has been gaining momentum for years. The goal is to beautify outdoor spaces while making them usable and functional in every season. This creates a whole new interpretation of outdoor living.

The Twist is designed to optimize the microclimate of an outdoor space. To this end, the slats can rotate from 0 to 120° to regulate air, light and sunlight penetration on the terrace as well as to protect terrace users from precipitation. The slats can be operated by remote control, but can also be controlled fully automatically by rain, wind and snow detectors built into the canopy.

"Gibus' R&D department pulled out all the stops when designing the Twist, resulting in a number of patents for this canopy," Westenbrink said. To open and close the roof, Twist Motion provides an elegant and synchronous rotational movement of the aluminum slats around two lateral pivot points. Side Seal ensures that the slats connect perfectly along the inner edge of the canopy to keep out wind and rain. Snow Melt is a heating system of the surface of the slats, which can keep ice and snow off the roof. The Twist can also be equipped with the Misting system: by means of patented misting nozzles in the frame of the canopy, a very fine water mist is dispersed, which when evaporated removes heat and provides cooling. Slat insulation is also possible which, according to Gibus' statement, provides a noise reduction of up to 70%. 

The Twist is offered in different versions and can be equipped with a number of options, such as glass walls, zipper screens, infrared heating, audio systems and LED lighting, allowing the canopy to be used not only all year round, but also until later in the evening. Control of some of these options can be done by remote control, but also remotely through an app. Bluetooth allows the built-in speakers to be controlled directly with a preferred music player, such as Spotify and Apple Music. 

The Twist can be detached or semi-detached with the front or one side attached. "Because of its many options, the Twist offers great design flexibility," Westenbrink knows. "Shaped and equipped according to the customer's preference, Twist canopies can be coupled in every possible way."

The Varia amazes and impresses. 

Another slat roof from Gibus is the Varia, which the Italian manufacturer credits with the keywords beauty, high-tech and customization. "The Varia creates an exciting space to comfortably enjoy the outdoors. For me, that is an apt characterization of this canopy," says Martijn Westenbrink. "It is the 'top of the range' as far as Gibus' bioclimatic canopies are concerned." 

"The Varia is distinguished by a contemporary design with clean lines and proportions. The louvers can rotate from 0 to 120°, and again this is done thanks to the patented Motion Twist system. Light and air supply and precipitation protection can be controlled as desired to provide an optimal microclimate, protected from the sun, with the possibility of ventilation and protected from precipitation. 

In addition to Twist Motion, the Varia also features patented techniques such as Side Seal, Snow Melt and the cooling Misting system. The also patented Inner Guide makes it possible to integrate sliding glass walls or zipper screens so that the Varia can also be used in the cool months and/or in strong winds.

One example is an LED lighting system with white or colored light to enjoy the patio cover even when it is dusk or dark. Another option are heaters to enjoy the outdoors even when it's not as warm. Both systems can be operated with a remote control, but also remotely with a home control app. Of course, the Varia can also be equipped with an audio system that can be controlled directly with a music player such as Spotify and Apple Music. There is also a USB connection built in for charging a smartphone or tablet, for example. And also with the Varia, slat insulation is possible for noise reduction up to 70%. 

The Varia can be designed and/or coupled entirely according to the customer's wishes. The canopy can be freestanding or semi-freestanding, attached to the facade. "Thanks to the efforts of the R&D department of Gibus, starting this year the Varia is even available in larger sizes, up to 5 m wide and 7.4 m projection in the six-post version. Coupled with the stylish and elegant design, these dimensions make the Varia an ideal solution not only for private, but certainly also for catering applications," concludes Westenbrink.
