A flexible garden room offers comfort in every season
After another hot summer, many consumers are looking for ways to keep their homes and outdoor spaces comfortable. Air conditioners are more popular than ever, but a comfortable indoor climate starts with the design of the garden room itself. A retractable roof, in particular, helps dissipate heat and makes the space pleasant to use all year round.
Although the market for sunrooms has grown significantly in recent years, virtually all glass sunrooms have a fixed roof. Ittalum has deliberately chosen a different approach. “A glass roof lets in plenty of daylight, but it also traps heat,” says Mike de Groot of Ittalum. “That’s precisely why we believe it’s important that not only the walls but also the roof can be opened. Warm air can escape, keeping the temperature much more comfortable.”
De Groot has noticed that the industry still often thinks in terms of the traditional glass sunroom. A dealer who recently joined the network confirmed this perception. It wasn’t until he was introduced to a retractable roof that he realized the additional possibilities. Even when the glass walls remain closed, natural ventilation creates a more pleasant space.

A retractable roof expands the range of uses throughout the year. In the spring and fall, users can sit sheltered behind closed glass walls while the roof is partially open. It’s similar to the experience of sitting on a glass-enclosed beachfront terrace. On hot summer days, the roof can be fully opened to allow heat to escape easily.
A retractable roof also works well in combination with outdoor sunshades. By blocking the sun before it reaches the glass while also providing ventilation, the temperature remains comfortable. Ittalum does not supply sunshades itself, but during the planning phase, we work with you to consider necessary provisions—such as the required electrical wiring or a connection point—so that sunshades can be easily added later.
It is precisely this forward thinking that De Groot sees as a key differentiator. “We look beyond our own products. If a dealer wants to install sun protection later on, we can take that into account during installation. This preparation results in a solution that not only works well today but is also ready for future expansions.”
