Shade cloths as part of architecture

The demand for high-quality awning fabrics is increasing rapidly. Not only because of the popularity of outdoor living, but also because of changing demands for aesthetics, performance and durability. Manufacturers and fabricators are looking for materials that are more resistant to the elements and match the (high) expectations of the end customer. As a result, innovation in fabrics and finishes is racing ahead.

We can say that the fabric is no longer a simple piece of textile, but a functional part of interior design and architecture that affects comfort and energy performance. Waterproof variants turn pergolas and canopies into fully-fledged outdoor rooms; blackout types improve the indoor climate in bedrooms and hotels.

The fabrics incorporated into modern screens and canopies block out sunlight, reduce heat, but increasingly still offer a view of the outside. That requires precisely developed weave structures, such as with a fiberglass core and coated sheathing for added stability. New coatings increase water repellency and color fastness so that the material retains its shape and appearance, even in damp environments or under intensive use.

Finishing makes all the difference

By the way, the technological advances are only in the fabric, but also in the finish. Improved yarn technology used by several manufacturers means that edges no longer fray when cut. This makes the confection process easier, shortens production time and reduces cutting waste in the workshop.

Dimensional stability has also increased. Manufacturers can handle larger fabrics without sagging or warping, which is crucial in wind-resistant zipper systems and large areas of glass. In addition, more and more is possible in terms of color, allowing the user to choose a shade that precisely matches the color of the façade or frame.

Sustainability as a core topic

Sustainability, meanwhile, is no longer a trend, but a necessity. Traditional materials (acrylic fabrics, PVC-coated polyester, HDPE) remain dominant, but change is underway. Such as the development of yarns based on recycled fibers, PVC-free coatings and production processes that use less water and energy. Residual fibers previously disposed of are being given a second life in new cloths.

Certifications such as OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN and Greenguard Gold are being demanded more frequently because they demonstrate that products have been produced responsibly and safely. For manufacturers and dealers, they are also a tangible proof towards the professional client.

Innovation and market development

Technological innovation continues. Manufacturers are working on cloths with self-cleaning or mildew-resistant coatings and researching textiles in which solar energy can be integrated. At the same time, the market is shifting from standard cloth to specific solutions per application: zipper screens, roofs, vertical façade awnings or textile façade panels.

For the shading chain, there are clear opportunities here. Those who combine material selection, processing and maintenance with knowledge of sustainability and aesthetics can distinguish themselves. It is therefore important to keep abreast of the latest developments. Z&R remains the platform where that knowledge comes together. From innovation at the fabric level to trends that move the industry forward.
