Made in China: An Honest Story
Behind every high-quality shutter or blind lies a carefully thought-out manufacturing process. From the selection of raw materials and the manufacturing partner to quality controls and logistics: every step in the chain ultimately determines the quality experienced by both the dealer and the end customer. According to JASNO, the ‘Made in China’ label therefore says little about the product. “It’s not about where you manufacture, but how and with whom,” says CEO Paul Welp.
When JASNO experienced strong growth at the beginning of this century, its production capacity in Europe reached its limits. The shutter company from Eersel sought a new manufacturing partner and settled on China. This choice was not driven by cost savings, but was a strategic decision. Paul: “We were looking for a partner who could manufacture according to our quality standards. China simply had the most expertise and experience with shutters.”
In 2019, JASNO switched to a new production partner that was even better aligned with the company’s ambitions—not only in terms of quality, but also in terms of sustainability and collaboration. “A major advantage is that the factory is located in the world’s largest Paulownia region,” says Paul. “This fast-growing, sustainable wood forms the basis for our wooden shutters and blinds. At our current partner’s facility, the sustainable Paulownia wood literally grows right next to the factory. That’s a major advantage. It minimizes transportation and ensures efficient production.”
Although production takes place in China, JASNO manufactures entirely according to its own Dutch Design. Paul: “We don’t produce any standard products at our factory. We manufacture all shutters and blinds according to our own product specifications, innovations, and quality standards. From molds to components and rails: everything we use is developed exclusively by us. That’s how we guarantee that every product is a genuine JASNO.”
In addition, production at JASNO is entirely focused on custom work. Every shutter and blind is made to order, tailored to the customer’s wishes and the specific situation. This requires a production chain in which design, production, and quality control are seamlessly integrated. The team in China works closely with the Netherlands. “We’re in daily contact; we talk on the phone a lot and visit the factory
on a regular basis. In addition, our assembly team in the Netherlands inspects every product that comes in. That’s how we keep the quality cycle going,” says Paul. JASNO also makes conscious choices when it comes to logistics. The shutters are mostly transported by train rather than by sea. “That’s more expensive, but more sustainable and more reliable. Quality is our top priority, but sustainability comes right after it in second place.”
According to Paul, it’s time to look at ‘Made in China’ differently. “The label says little about a product’s quality. Ultimately, it comes down to the choices a manufacturer makes: which partner you choose, how you produce, and what standards you set.” For JASNO, manufacturing in China is a deliberate, strategic choice that aligns with the brand’s quality promise. It’s not the country of origin that determines quality, but the manufacturing process and the people behind it. “It is precisely this combination of craftsmanship, customization, and quality assurance that forms the foundation for a product that both dealers and end users can trust,” says Paul.
