Smart shading: opportunities for installers and suppliers

For professionals in the shading industry - from installers to suppliers - shading has long since ceased to be just an accessory. It is a crucial part of modern building management and an opportunity to serve customers smarter, more efficiently and sustainably. How can companies differentiate themselves in this market? Jethro van Veelen, Commercial Technical Engineer at Driekleur-Besturingen, shares insights on how installers and suppliers can optimize their services and realize cost savings.

"Many installers don't get a call until a shading system is malfunctioning, but by then it's often too late." To avoid this, and to build long-term customer relationships, installers can actively advise customers on preventive maintenance. "Strategic service planning prevents problems, especially during the summer months when solar shading is essential for comfort and energy savings."

An often underestimated aspect is the service life of weather stations. "Many installers only replace them when measurement errors occur, but by then the damage has already been done," Van Veelen warns. Regular inspections and timely replacement can prevent inefficient shading and energy waste. In addition, unexpected obstacles, such as nesting gulls on roofs, can delay maintenance work. By managing these risks in advance, installers save time and costs.

Remote service: smarter management and fewer unnecessary trips

For installers and suppliers, remote service is a gamechanger. "With remote monitoring, we can adjust and check systems remotely without a technician having to be physically present," Van Veelen explains. This not only saves time and call-out costs, but also increases customer satisfaction by resolving faults faster.

Smart integrations with building management systems allow blinds to automatically respond to weather conditions. This not only provides a better indoor climate, but also helps companies reduce energy costs. Installers who offer this technology can stand out as strategic partners to their customers.

Sustainability as a revenue model

Sustainability is not just a marketing term, but a way for installers and suppliers to add value. "You don't have to think sustainable to be sustainable," says Van Veelen. By smartly upgrading existing systems rather than replacing them, installers can save their customers costs while strengthening their own market position.

One effective approach is to integrate smart sensors into existing installations. "By using a 'mix & match' strategy, installers can modernize older systems without major and costly replacements." This means lower investments for the end customer and new opportunities for the installer.

Technical expertise as a competitive advantage

In addition, technical knowledge is an important asset. Installing blinds is not just a matter of motors and control technology, but requires an understanding of material properties and environmental factors. "It is essential to know how different types of blinds react to wind load, moisture and temperature," Van Veelen explains.

Three-Color Controls provides support for installers through technical training and hands-on guidance. "We believe in the power of knowledge sharing: from the right Hirschmann plug to an accurate wind meter, every detail counts. Installers who keep their knowledge up to date are better able to advise customers and install systems more efficiently."
