Architecture students with a passion for their craft will once again have the opportunity to present their ideas to a jury of internationally recognized architects. From September 1, 2019 to April 1, 2020 they apply for the 2020 International VELUX Award, the largest global student competition of its kind.
This is the 9th edition of the competition, which has been organized every two years since 2004. With the International VELUX Award (IVA), the VELUX Group appeals to architecture students worldwide to explore, research and see the role of daylight in architecture as an ever-relevant source of light, energy, well-being and joy.
“Our goal is to show tomorrow's architects already during their education what daylight in building designs can do for the people who stay in them,” says Per Arnold Andersen, project manager of the International VELUX Award. “Over the years we have looked at more than 5,000 projects from more than 10,000 students who have presented very inspiring ideas. Every time, we are excited to see how students on the five continents deal with daylight in architecture and consider daylighting strategies and solutions for the future. As former juror Peter Stutchbury put it: “When you organize a contest like this, you are doing something that has the potential to change your world.”. This award is the perfect opportunity for students to give full rein to their vision and creativity, to challenge themselves to their fullest potential and to really think borderlessly,” Andersen said.
Once the registration period closes, students (teams) have until June 15 to submit their project in one of two categories: Daylight in Buildings, which focuses on projects that show how to make smarter use of daylight in buildings. Or Daylight Investigations which focuses on research into crucial factors for the health and well-being of building occupants. Think about the physical properties of daylight and new construction materials.
In July, a jury of renowned architects will select two winners from each of the five world regions determined by The International Union of Architects. Dutch students compete in the two categories in the Western Europe region. The total of 10 regional winners will be invited to present their projects in person to the jury during the World Architecture Festival in November 2020. After which one global winner will be chosen from each of the two categories. These global winners will each receive €5,000, which will be divided between the student(s) and the lecturer(s). The jury will also award prizes to students who demonstrate the innovative use of VELUX products.
The jury of IVA 2020 will be announced next November. In previous years, a number of internationally renowned architects such as Glenn Murcutt (AU), Alvaro Siza (PT), Kengo Kuma (JP), Hani Rachid (USA), Carme Pigem (ES), Craig Dykers (USA) and Li Hu (CHN), took their place on the jury.
The IVA, a biennial award for the best concept projects in architecture, has become the largest competition of its kind since its first edition in 2004. Organized in close cooperation with the International Union of Architects (UIA) and the World Architecture Festival (WAF), the Award is recognized by the following educational organizations: The European Association for Architectural Education (EAAE), The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the Architectural Research Centres Consortium (ARCC) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA).
