Professionalization drive at industry association Romazo continues

Commitment to training

Like every other company in the Netherlands, awning companies are struggling with a shortage of qualified personnel. The members of the trade association Romazo are jointly trying to solve this by investing heavily in training. Jeroen de Roos, branch manager of Romazo, talks about a three-stage rocket.

"For example, we organize course days for mechanics. In one day, various topics are then discussed. For example, we then talk about new fasteners from Würth, about the challenge of the mechanic presenting himself as an ambassador or about being able to obtain an aerial work platform diploma. In addition, in cooperation with OOM, the industry has developed e-learning modules that can be followed easily and free of charge via the Internet platform oZone. So: study at home and gain knowledge! Third, the ROC is introducing an optional module for solar panel fitters. It is a short elective where young people are introduced to the wonderful profession of awning mechanic."

But there is more going on within Romazo. For example, Jeroen de Roos has long been surprised that no subsidy is given on solar shading. "There are some local initiatives, for example in Rotterdam and Nieuwegein, but nationally there is no regulation. We have therefore written a memorandum with some other parties advocating subsidies. Solar shading is ideally suited to prevent overheating in buildings and homes, with the side effect that less heat needs to be cooled away. After all, we know that this releases less CO2 and uses less energy. Should it not succeed in creating a subsidy fund, we are committed to making the use of solar shading in homes a legal requirement, as it already is in non-residential buildings."

Another spearhead is increasing Romazo's visibility, for example on social media, or better use of the website and making more optimal use of members' networks. "That we are getting on well is evident from the number of companies that spontaneously contact the secretariat asking how they can become members," Jeroen notes with satisfaction. "When we ask them in return why they want to do so, the answer is invariably that their customers have inquired in the showroom whether the company is a member of the trade association. A good sign!" As far as Jeroen is concerned, there is still plenty to do for the members and by the members in the next year!
