A screen is meant to keep insects out. That makes sense. But a good screen does more than that: it needs to be durable, easy to use, and as inconspicuous as possible. That’s why Unilux, the screen manufacturer based in Boxtel, pays close attention during the production process to what is perhaps the most important component of any screen: the mesh. “We’re going to talk about pleated mesh that can take a beating!” says Dènis van Loosbroek, General Manager.
That’s why pleated insect screens use a special pleated mesh that doesn’t tear at the seams. “That might seem obvious, but the seams can actually be a weak point in pleated mesh,” explains Dènis during a tour of the factory. “Frequent opening and closing of a screen puts the mesh under constant movement and tension. With less suitable mesh, this can eventually lead to damage or tears at the seams. That’s why we deliberately choose pleated mesh that prevents this problem. The pleats remain intact, even with daily and intensive use. This not only ensures a longer lifespan but, above all, guarantees that a screen continues to do what it’s meant to do.”

The color of the mesh also affects ease of use. Unilux installs black mesh as standard in all its insect screens. “That might sound surprising. After all, you might think that black actually obstructs the view. In practice, the opposite is true. Just think of white sheer curtains: they’re light and create a cozy atmosphere, but at the same time they block the view outside. Black mesh, on the other hand, is highly transparent. This means the view from inside the home remains virtually completely unobstructed, and the mesh is barely noticeable.”
That makes black mesh particularly suitable for windows and doors where an unobstructed view is important. The screen does its job, while inside you hardly feel like there’s anything between you and the outside world. “For those who prefer a different look, gray mesh is also available. This allows for personal preference and the specific situation of the home,” says Dènis.

In addition to the standard black mesh, Unilux offers various solutions for specific situations. For example, a fixed screen door can be equipped with Petscreen. This extra-strong mesh is more resistant to claws and impacts, making it ideal for households with pets. Optionally, the screen door can be equipped with a cat flap, allowing a pet to go in and out on its own.
There is also a special solution for people who are sensitive to pollen: the patented Poll-Tex® mesh. This mesh helps block pollen while offering high transparency and good air permeability. Poll-Tex® has been extensively tested at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, a clinic specializing in allergies.
Dènis concludes: “A good screen not only keeps insects out, but also contributes to comfort, an unobstructed view, and a fresh home.”
