Belgians are flocking to find outdoor awnings, shutters and patio solutions to anticipate another hot summer. The rush is currently unseen, leaving manufacturers barely able to keep up with demand. That more and more consumers are turning back to these sustainable, energy-efficient and low-carbon solutions against overheating plays into the hands of a climate-neutral society.
Globally, global warming is accelerating. Belgium also demolished a record last year: not only were there more moments of extreme heat, they also lasted much longer. Unfortunately, our buildings and terraces are not prepared for this. Large areas of glass, combined with thorough insulation and airtightness, increase the risk of overheating in summer. And then it is also sweating and puffing indoors.
As a result, Belgians are looking en masse for solutions. Awnings, roller shutters and patio solutions are sustainable ways to keep your home and patio free from heat. Ann Van Eycken, secretary general of VEROZO, the umbrella industry association for shutters and awnings, is pleased that consumers are opting for green solutions. "It's best to weather the sun before it penetrates the window or patio and not afterwards, because then it's mopping up. More and more people seem to realize that. The flip side, though, is that the industry is facing unprecedented demand today, compounded by telecommuting and the staycation effect. People want to enjoy their home, apartment and outdoor space to the fullest throughout the year."
"This is really unseen in our industry.", suggests Ann Van Eycken. "In our industry, we typically experience peak demand that is located in the spring. We have already seen this trend evolve in recent years to a more constant demand throughout the year. But the relentless rush that has been occurring with our member manufacturers since the beginning of this year is truly unprecedented."
Manufacturers invested heavily in additional staff and production capacity very early in the year, but it is still not enough to meet current demand. In addition, the construction industry is struggling with a search for qualified personnel and a difficult supply of raw materials and parts. As a result, delivery times are getting longer.
Ann Van Eycken: "We hope consumers understand that we are facing an exceptional situation, where supply and demand are temporarily out of balance. Nevertheless, we are convinced that with these solutions consumers are making smart investments: the value as well as the comfort of their homes increases. Solar shading and terrace solutions bring an immediate return in the form of a pleasant indoor and outdoor climate. Moreover, they are energy-efficient and low-carbon, thus contributing to a climate-neutral society."
